UNDERSTANDING ART IN CONTEXT TO CULTURE & SOCIETY
- PERSONAL ENJOYMENT - Do you make art for fun or have a hobby that you enjoy doing? Engage in making a piece of art for the pleasure of it, or continue your favorite hobby! Using magazine images, create a collage that shows your favorite things.
- SOCIAL COMMENTARY - Art is used to help people voice how they feel about things that go on in society. Art can give voice to people who want to discuss important issues. Do you believe in a particular social issue? Use your artistic voice by developing a slogan and creating a picket sign do demonstrate your thoughts. Draw a scene that reflects a social issue that you feel is important. Include positive subject matter and ideas for resolution.
- RELIGION - Art is used to represent and celebrate religion. Art as religious identity reflects heritage, unity, and culture. Do you celebrate religious and/or cultural holidays? Create a work that reflects your heritage. Look online at how religion is reflected in the art work of a range of cultures. Notice how symbols are used to express religious beliefs. If you celebrate a religious/cultural holiday during this time away from school, create an object that reflects your celebration. Take pictures of your artistic process.
- COMMERCIAL PERSUASION - Media and commercial advertisements are used to sway people to buy products and form opinions. Look at a few ads and commercials online. Notice how they use mood, colour, emphasis, and word/letter style to get you to "buy in" to what they are communicating. Create your own advertisement for a product using these visual elements and principles. Design a commercial advertisement and set at home. Ask family members to be actors, and write a script. Take a video of your very own advertisement.
- STATUS - Art is used to show importance and wealth. Statues, paintings, flags, jewels, etc are common art pieces that show the importance of an individual (like a king or queen) or larger group of people (like a family or nation). Think about your future career(s). Compose an art piece that reflects your future status and role in society. Look online at the portraits of artist, Guisseppe Archimboldo. Create your own status self portrait (or a portrait of another prominent social figure). Instead of realistic human features, fill the figure with images of symbols and objects that visually describe their role in society.
creative expression
REFER TO THE LIST BELOW TO HELP YOU CREATE IMAGES BASED THE GENERATION AND USE OF YOUR IDEAS:
- IMAGE MASH-UP: Collect 3 different images (i.e., from books, magazines, newspaper, photos, and online sources). Create an artistic image that blends aspects from all 3 images. Make sure to record the URL, or write down the book title, author, date of publication, and page#). sign your work at the bottom right-hand side of the paper (this is your artist signature). Challenge: Write a statement that describes the meaning or intent of your piece (aka: Artist Statement).
- CONTINUE THE PICTURE: Using the available images at home, cut out (or draw) one small object. make sure you cut off a small piece of the object itself. Glue it to a blank piece of paper. Using your art supplies, develop an image around and including the object. Do this by continuing the lines present in the found image and your imagination.
- BREAKFAST WITH THE ARTIST: Google the images of artists Vincent Van Gogh or Paul Cezanne - get to know their signature artistic styles. Notice how works have lines, shapes, and textures in common to the specific artist. At your next breakfast, fill up your plate with the food that you would normally eat. Take a picture of your breakfast plate using your device (look down at your plate for a frontal view). Recreate an image of your breakfast using the artistic style of Van Gogh or Cezanne.
- SCULPTURE-IN-THE-ROUND: Create a 3-dimensional sculpture using empty containers from your recycling and tape and glue. make sure you consider all sides of your sculpture. Challenge: Take a photo of your sculpture then draw it out showing your knowledge of how to communicate one idea visually in multiple ways.
- FOUND OBJECT: Find an object (or a piece of recycling) that is no longer of use. Think about the meaning of the object and what it's purpose is. Then think about it's opposite meaning. Apply paint to the found object, to make it reflect it's opposite meaning. For example, an empty plastic bottle's opposite meaning may be a tree.
- RE-PURPOSED FASHION: Select items from your closet that you intend on recycling (old, used, worn, doesn't fit you anymore). Using scissors, a needle and thread, combine sections from each piece of clothing - make a new garment!
- CREATURE MASH-UP: Create an art image by combining the parts of 5 different animals. Give your creature a new name. Look on line and in books to practice drawing the animals.
